Carver Profile I am a native of Albany ,New York and live at the foot hills of the Helderberg in Voorheesville, New York. I work from my home studio and Galley. Visitor's are welcomed by appointment only. I started carving about 6 years ago and I am self taught. My art back ground of some 30 years in fine arts has given me insight for form composition and colour. I say I am self taught, however, nature has been my teacher and inspiration, there is nothing that can surpass that. Several days a week my Black Lab and I go for a walk in the woods and it is there that I find all I need to know for my creative spirit. My carvings are usually in basswood or tupelo. I use the band saw to cut out the profile and knives to round out the form .I start stacking the layers for the feather formations and use a foremen power tool with diamond and ruby cutters to achieve various textures. The carving being completed up to this point ,the next step is to seal the wood with a laquer and gesso .The painting process comes next. I use oils and acrylics in a glazing process. A final coat of varnish is used to seal and protect the paint. This application will keep it beautiful for many years to come. The basses are either hand carved or I turned them on the lathe. Each piece is signed and dated.
